Pigeons have the same ability to see color as people do, but they also can see ultraviolet light, which humans are not able to see. Due to their special sensibility and superb all-around eyesight, pigeons are frequently used in search and rescue operations at sea.

The ‘mirror test,’ which involves being able to recognize one’s reflection in a mirror, has been reported to be passed by pigeons. The pigeon is the only non-mammal animal and one of just six species with this ability.

Pigeons have a high level of intelligence and can conceptualize in addition to being able to recognize all 26 letters of the alphabet. Pigeons can distinguish between images and even between two different humans in a single image.

Are Pigeons Colorblind? (Explained) 3

The ability to see like a pigeon is even more amazing. All the hues of the rainbow, including red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, are visible to humans. Pigeons see more, though. Beyond violet, or so-called UV, light, they can detect it.

Polarized light is also visible to pigeons. Light waves in polarized light only vibrate in one direction. Light waves vibrate in a variety of directions in ordinary light. Through these different sensing windows on the universe, pigeons must observe some pretty fascinating things, according to Walcott. But how can be able to see this manner benefit pigeons? Nobody is aware.

Project Sea Hunt was started by the US Navy in 1978. In it, pigeons were taught to peck an “alarm” button if they saw objects in the water that were orange, red, or yellow (these are standard life-jacket colors). According to a Navy paper, scientists were previously aware of pigeons’ “higher search rate capacity” from earlier experiments.

What Colors Can Pigeons See?

On the side of their heads, pigeons have eyes. The bird now has a field of vision that is 135 degrees in the vertical and 340 degrees in the horizontal. This indicates that pigeons have a wide field of vision and can see objects in front of them as well as to the sides.

Humans, on the other side, only have a 135-degree vertical and 180-degree horizontal field of vision. We can see who’s in front of us just as well as pigeons can, but our ability to see sideways is rather limited. Humans have trichromatic eyes, which can distinguish between three distinct color channels; pigeons, on the other hand, have pent achromatic eyes, which can distinguish between five distinct color channels.

Pigeons are consequently capable of seeing ultraviolet light, which humans are unable to do. The human retina has 200,000 photoreceptor cells per square millimeter. The same number is present in the area of the pigeon’s eye that absorbs light from its frontal view. However, they have around 400,000 photoreceptors in the area of their eyes that receive light from their exceptional sideways vision.

We lose depth awareness, eyesight, and the ability to distinguish between virtually identical colors as things get further away from our central vision. Pigeons, however, do not behave in this manner. These creatures have the great lateral vision, which allows them to perceive objects even when they are further away from their central vision.

Do Pigeons Have the Ability to Swim?

Pigeons and their swimming abilities have been a subject of curiosity for many. While pigeons are known for their excellent flying skills, their swimming abilities are rather limited. Pigeons are not adapted for swimming in water due to their small size and lack of specialized physical features like webbed feet or waterproof feathers. Their feathers get easily wet and heavy, making swimming a challenge for them. Therefore, pigeons are not considered proficient swimmers.

What Color Do Pigeons Hate?

There is certainly some truth to the claims made by many bird owners that their bird is terrified of the color red. Some birds may perceive red with apprehension, just as we humans interpret it to indicate caution. Try to limit the presence of red around your cage or play area if your bird finds it frightening.

White is another hue that might terrify your Pigeon. Similar to red, this is frequently employed as a danger sign because it shines out, especially in the unique eyes of your Pigeon. Although it’s doubtful that your pet will shiver in dread every time he tells your white walls, you should try to keep any bright areas away from him.

Some Pigeons have an altogether different perspective on the world than humans do because they can perceive UV light. Therefore, it’s possible that your Pigeon is being scared by the color’s intensity rather than the color itself.

To avoid using any colors that would frighten your Pigeon’s nesting location, consider neutral hues like green, yellow, and blue. To find out the colors you’re Pigeon like, experiment with various hues and tones. If you’re not sure where to begin, watch your Pigeon and see if you can determine which colors would appeal to or repel him.
